I started True Essence because I wanted to make photographs and films that people would actually recognize themselves in. After more than 15 years behind the camera, I’ve learned that good direction matters, but so does knowing when to get out of the way.
I work with couples, families, graduates, businesses, and organizations. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable, respected, and seen.
I’m Dontavious, a photographer, cinematographer, and dad. I’ve spent more than 15 years learning how to work with light, guide people without making it awkward, and spot the moments that happen between the planned ones.

The name True Essence came from a friend and mentor during a conversation about what I wanted my work to mean. It stuck because it sounded like the goal: make something honest to the people in front of me.
