Why We Don’t Release RAW or Unedited Photos
Understand why True Essence Photography delivers finished images rather than RAW files, how proof galleries work, and what to ask before booking.
Why don’t photographers deliver unedited images?
If you’ve ever loved a photo session and wanted every image straight from the camera, you’re not alone. Clients sometimes ask for RAW files, unedited photographs, or all of the extra frames from a shoot. At True Essence Photography, based in Greenville, NC and available nationwide, we focus on delivering carefully selected, finished photographs that reflect both the session and the quality of work you booked.
RAW images are working files, not finished photographs. They may need adjustments to color, exposure, contrast, composition, and skin tones before they represent our final work. An image can look different across cameras, editing software, and screens before those finishing decisions are made.

What’s the difference between a proof, a RAW file, and a final photograph?
Proofs are images used to review a session and make selections. A proof may be smaller or carry a watermark, depending on the gallery and the agreement. RAW files are original camera data intended for editing. Finished photographs are the images selected and prepared for delivery, printing, or sharing.
We consider lighting, color, cropping, and the overall collection when preparing finished images. Delivering every test frame, duplicate, or unfinished image would create a different experience from delivering a curated body of photographs. To learn what happens during postproduction, read our guide to photo editing versus retouching.
Can I select or purchase more photos?
Your proposal and booking agreement define what is included with a session. If a proofing gallery is offered, it can help you choose favorites. Additional edited images may be available to purchase according to your current agreement and gallery options. We encourage you to ask about selection limits and delivery before your session so expectations are clear.
Not every photograph taken during a shoot is a deliverable. Some are lighting tests, near-duplicates, moments between poses, or frames that don’t meet our standards. Those working images are part of how a photographer reaches the final results.
What about personal editing or filters?
We understand wanting photographs that suit your own style. For portraits, headshots, weddings, and commercial projects, it’s best to tell us how the images will be used and what finish you prefer during planning. We can discuss natural retouching, consistent color, or other needs before production. File formats, usage rights, and editing terms follow the agreement for your specific project.
Questions about delivery?
Before booking, ask what images are included, whether you’ll receive proofs, what resolution will be delivered, whether additional selects are offered, and when you can expect your gallery. You can view photography options or contact True Essence Photography with questions about your session.
